Is 3D printed objects really safe and harmless?
Nowadays 3D printing is so popular that many 3D companies claim that almost everything can be produced by 3D printers. There are even 3D printed food, such as chocolates, cookies, and even pizzas! But are 3D printed objects really safe and harmless?
A team of researchers from University of California, Riverside just found that parts produced by some commercial 3D printers are toxic to certain fish embryos. Then the problems about how to dispose of parts and waste materials from 3D printers become quite important.
They did research on two types of 3D printers: one function as it melts plastic to build a part and the other uses light to turn a liquid into a solid part. The results came out that the parts from both types of printers were toxic to zebrafish embryos, and parts from the second type were more toxic. The researchers also came up with a simple post-printing treatment to reduce the toxicity of parts from the liquid-based printer. They found that after exposing the parts to ultraviolet light for an hour, those parts are remarkably less toxic to zebrafish embryos. The UC Riverside Office of Technology Commercialization has filed a patent for this work.
skui also investigated methods for reducing the toxicity of parts from the liquid-resin printer. She found that after exposing the parts to ultraviolet light for one hour, the parts are significantly less toxic to zebrafish embryos. The UC Riverside Office of Technology Commercialization has filed a patent for this work. These findings
The researchers' findings are important for regulations related to the materials used to create 3D printed parts. The researchers will do further research about the toxicity of the components of the 3D printer material both individually and when mixed together in a completed part. And more will be focused on whether the material could be harmful to humans at a certain level.
